Auschwitz was located in Poland.  It was the largest and most notorious of all concentration camps. Auschwitz was not just a death camp. It also contained a slave labor or forced labor complex.

About 1.25 million people were murdered there from September 1941 to January 1945. Most of those that died at Auschwitz were Jews. Other victims included Poles, Gypsies, and Soviet prisoners of war.

Auschwitz was three camps in one.
  • Auschwitz I was built in 1940.
  • Auschwitz II (Birkenau) was built in 1941
  • Auschwitz III (Monowitz) was built in 1942

Auschwitz is now a museum run by the Poland government and is open to the public today.
