Our process of teaching citation info has evolved over the years.  At one time, we, in the media center, taught everything about source/note cards, Works Cited, etc.  At some point in time, we decided that the English teachers would need to take on this responsibility as they prepared their students for a research project.  With all our scheduled classes, we simply could not find time to teach the research process.

However, we did not want to dump everything in the teacher's laps or have them use the examples in their textbooks, which are nearly always wrong!  This did not relieve us from the responsibility of helping teach the research process either.

So here is what we did!

1.  Based on the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers/Joseph Gibaldi, we created a handout of online citations and another handout of print citations.  We put an example of all the types of citations that the students might need.  (For those sources that don't fit the mold, we
refer to our handbook.)

2.  These handouts are laminated and kept in the Research and
Docmentation display in the media center.

3.  These handouts are also available on our Webpage under the Teacher's Toolbox and in a Teacher Utility folder on the teacher laptops.

4.  We update these handouts every year.

5.  We also prepared a notebook of 20+ transparencies related to the research process...from selecting your topic, outlining, how to do source cards, etc.  Every English teacher has a notebook.

6.  When classes are scheduled, we prepare a Source Information Sheet for our 9th and 10th graders to use as they collect info needed for citations.  We also have for them a modified version of the online/print handouts.

7.  The 11th and 12th graders do not get the Source Info Sheet; they are past this.  They do get a modified version of the handouts based on the sources we know that they are using.

This is probably more than you wanted to know, but I hope it helps.  The only other thing we would like to do is hold a research workshop of any interested teachers.
